Here's where you should start building a budget
FIRST: ENROLL IN THIS COURSE
When you’re feeling tentative, or maybe even a little overwhelmed about getting control over your money… you have to start slow.
This course has no budgets. No financial acronyms. It’s just about you, and your money.
I built it specifically for people like you because I was a person like you.
Sign up for free, and it will give you the tools to move forward.
SECOND: KEEP UP WITH THE COURSE WORK FOR AT LEAST 30 DAYS
You’ll see in the course it talks about daily money check ins. It can be tempting after a few days to try to move on, but I want to encourage you to stick with it.
You want a budget, but I want to make sure you have all the information and habits you need BEFORE you start building a budget. That way you’re set up for success.
Just keep doing your check-ins. That’s enough for now.
THIRD: PUT YOUR PENNIES INTO PILES
Pick a rainy (or snowy) night. Pour yourself a glass of wine and go through your checkins. Sort the expenses into categories that make sense for you (you’ll see how you chose to write them down).
After you’ve put together your data, check to see if anything glaring is missing… like a regular bill that somehow didn’t get covered in your thirty days.
Once you’re done… you’re ready to budget.
FOURTH: LET’S BUILD A BUDGET
I love YNAB for budgets. I think it’s a great software, especially for artists and variable income earners.
Full disclosure: not everyone does, and you don’t have to. I also don’t get any kind of affliate income for recommending them, I just wanted to give you a place to start when you’re making your budget.
Whether you go with them (they have a free 34 day trial), or with another budget template. Now that you’ve got your expenses and categories PLUS a regular habit of checking in with your money…. you’ll be on your way to budgeting success.
This guide should not be construed as official financial advice, but merely as information. Without speaking to you, or taking a look at your specific numbers I can’t know for sure what the best next step for you is.
